The old ceramic Daikoku figure offered here wears a heavy, dark patina of soot over its once clean surface. Such sooty deposits are common with older images of this deity as such figures were in the past often placed as luck charms in the rafters of farmhouses where open hearth cooking was done. Smoke from the stove would escape through special vents in the roof and leave sooty deposits on any Daikoku figures looking down from the rafters. This wonderful statue dates from at least the Japanese Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) periods though it is likely much older still.
